Forum Feedback

To the right of where it says “powershell” in the terminal window, there’s a combination + and down caret icon. Click on the down caret and select Command Prompt.

I’m in Command Line with errors still. I have updated the ticket, if you have time to refresh my memory of your suggested remedies. thank you.

Could we put a link to the forum in the IRC channels’ welcome messages?

The “Akismet spam filter” needs to be re-configured.

I posted a solution to my question today.

Why?
I thought it would aid others who may be confused about the same issue at some point or another.

What happened?
Akismet removed my solution and classed it as spam when I took the time to write it out carefully and keep things to the point.

The spam filter unfortunately stops quite a lot of actual spam, too - your message is not removed, it just goes into a moderation queue, and one of us will get to it and restore it after a day or so.

Looks great so far! Everything feels organized, and the guidelines are helpful. Maybe a polls for suggestions could be a nice addition!

Just suggesting,

if we can have a hidden chat,
for every topic or post,
that we can use to discuss the progress or ideas(related to that topic or post);
without disrupting the flow of topic posts.

Or, maybe it’s unnecessary and should we use discord!

I don’t think that’s something that we’re able to do via the forum software!

I have been pondering about the top level categories. There have been a few changes recently which I think have been good. However I think there is still one missing which I would tentatively call “Community”

I would expect this category to house some off topic threads, meta feedback like this conversation as well as the existing “Events” and “Show and Tell” category.

In terms of the off topic threads, if I think in relation to Discord these type of off topic channels is where the most community has happen (family/pets and food being firm favourites)

What do folks think?

First, I think this is something to be determined by the DSF. I don’t know how much this forum is costing the DSF, but my understanding is that there is an expense associated with it, and any changes to what is allowed here should be evaluated with an eye toward those expenses.

I would much prefer keeping the forum focused on the technical and administrative issues in the Django ecosystem.

I feel like this forum serves a different purpose than Discord or any of the other “chat-style” social media sites - more of a “Q&A wiki” than for “general conversation”.

Something that first surprised me is how many of the discussion threads end up getting indexed by Google and become highly-ranked answers when searching.

As a result, I don’t see where encouraging those types of conversations here adds value to the forum. If someone wants to talk about the weather, their pets, or their favorite recipies, there are plenty of other locations where that can be done - including Discord.

(Note: There’s also a precedence here for a related issue in that we don’t allow for “Help Wanted” or “Job Wanted” posts - again, with the idea that there are other sites better suited for those types of posts.)

Jumping around between different djangoproject sites would feel smoother if the main menu options of the forum site mirrored the others. Currently:

Forum: Project Homepage | Download | Documentation | Code | Issues

All others: Overview | Download | Documentation | News | Code | Issues | Community | Foundation | Donate

I know it wouldn’t be identical, for example the search box or gravatar. However, it would make the Forum feel a lot less like “a different site”.
