# Possible performance improvements of psycopg3 support in Django 4.2

I was reading about [Django 4.2’s Psycopg 3 support](https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/releases/4.2/#psycopg-3-support) and was excited about the potential for performance/efficiency improvements that updates to that library could bring. I was curious to understand how many of these new features are utilized now or planned in the future.

Many of these questions related to [What’s new in Psycopg 3](https://www.psycopg.org/psycopg3/docs/basic/from_pg2.html#what-s-new-in-psycopg-3).

- Does Django take advantage of the new efficient [`COPY` support](https://www.psycopg.org/psycopg3/docs/basic/copy.html#copy)?
  - I’ve read [posts before about how performant `COPY` can be](https://decode.cedar.com/fast-django-model-inserts-with-postgres/)

- This [blog posts talks about server-side binding](https://fly.io/blog/standout-features-in-django-4-2/) and that it is experimental.
  - The [docs](https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/databases/#server-side-parameters-binding) say it is not default, but don’t mention it is experimental. I was curious how stable this feature is?

- Does Django ever use the [more efficient `BINARY` protocol](https://www.psycopg.org/psycopg3/docs/basic/params.html#binary-data)?
- Are the new [connection pools](https://www.psycopg.org/psycopg3/docs/advanced/pool.html#connection-pools) in use?
- Any other performance ramifications users should be aware of when moving to the new database driver?
