Django Apache deployment not working as intended

Greetings everyone.

I have a problem with deploying django app on my ubuntu home server for the first time, using Apache and mod_wsgi. For deployment, I have mostly followed this tutorial: How to use Django with Apache and mod_wsgi | Django documentation | Django. I ran into a problem, where my django app is running incredibly slow, compared to development server, which I also tested on server itself and i also ran into a problem, where although i port forwarded port 80, I am still unable to access it from outside (I also tested this with development server on port 8000 and it works just fine). Error logs are also not showing anythin useful.

My apache2.conf looks like this:

# This is the main Apache server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/ for detailed information about
# the directives and /usr/share/doc/apache2/README.Debian about Debian specific
# hints.
#
#
# Summary of how the Apache 2 configuration works in Debian:
# The Apache 2 web server configuration in Debian is quite different to
# upstream's suggested way to configure the web server. This is because Debian's
# default Apache2 installation attempts to make adding and removing modules,
# virtual hosts, and extra configuration directives as flexible as possible, in
# order to make automating the changes and administering the server as easy as
# possible.

# It is split into several files forming the configuration hierarchy outlined
# below, all located in the /etc/apache2/ directory:
#
#	/etc/apache2/
#	|-- apache2.conf
#	|	`-- ports.conf
#	|-- mods-enabled
#	|	|-- *.load
#	|	`-- *.conf
#	|-- conf-enabled
#	|	`-- *.conf
# `-- sites-enabled
# `-- *.conf
#
#
# * apache2.conf is the main configuration file (this file). It puts the pieces
# together by including all remaining configuration files when starting up the
# web server.
#
# * ports.conf is always included from the main configuration file. It is
# supposed to determine listening ports for incoming connections which can be
# customized anytime.
#
# * Configuration files in the mods-enabled/, conf-enabled/ and sites-enabled/
# directories contain particular configuration snippets which manage modules,
# global configuration fragments, or virtual host configurations,
# respectively.
#
# They are activated by symlinking available configuration files from their
# respective *-available/ counterparts. These should be managed by using our
# helpers a2enmod/a2dismod, a2ensite/a2dissite and a2enconf/a2disconf. See
# their respective man pages for detailed information.
#
# * The binary is called apache2. Due to the use of environment variables, in
# the default configuration, apache2 needs to be started/stopped with
# /etc/init.d/apache2 or apache2ctl. Calling /usr/bin/apache2 directly will not
# work with the default configuration.

And finally, this is how my django app looks like:

I am also trying to deploy this app without python virtual enviroment.

Thank you all in advance!

I figured out, that I needed to add following line in apache2.conf for it to work properly:

WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL}

I still have no idea, why does this work though.
Regarding ports, I have a feeling that ISP is blocking it, have to check there.

@MihaMarkovi can’t believe it but that worked

Many hours searching for this!
WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL}

Hey, I’m glad that you found it useful

I’m not familiar with django and apache, so I don’t know if this is the right answer, but here’s what I think.

It’s due to some third part packages(e.g. numpy, scipy), include C extensions.

If you use mod_wsgi, you’ll use sub Python interpreter. But these packages don’t work well with sub interpreter. So you need to use main Python Interpreter, by using ‘WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL}’.

Since it’s annoying to find out incompatible packages, I just use ‘WSGIApplicationGroup %{GLOBAL}’. as default.

Below is the related explanation in mod_wsgi documents. Also check virtual environment and WSGIApplicationGroup documents.

Any WSGI applications in the global application group will always be executed within the context of the first interpreter created by Python when it is initialised, of the process handling the request. Forcing a WSGI application to run within the first interpreter can be necessary when a third party C extension module for Python has used the simplified threading API for manipulation of the Python GIL and thus will not run correctly within any additional sub interpreters created by Python.

P.S

If you don’t have useful information in apache’s error.log, then it’s probably not caused by apache. But you can make sure by set lower LogLevel like ‘debug’ for test.
Also, I recommend to set Django logging configuration. If you don’t, then it’s hard to debugging when the problem is not caused by apache. See Django logging documents.
(Also don’t forget to set high LogLevel when debug finished!)
