Hi there,
I may have not spent enough time searching for an answer, but something seems unclear to me.
A couple of months ago I submitted a new feature idea on the idea board. It seems that feedback is positive about it. Now in the next few weeks/months I will have some time to work on this, but I’m not sure how to proceed.
Clearly my idea is not big enough to go through a DEP. But it’s also clearly meant to be included into Django core. I don’t know what to do, here are the options I see for now:
- Create a new ticket with a link to my idea: the “Please read this first” section says a pretty intimidating “If the feature is approved for Django core, a feature ticket may be created here”, so I don’t feel I should do that now, but I don’t know how to tell if my idea is “approved for Django core”
- Ask people in the idea itself if the feature is approved: but who do I ping in order to get an answer? What are the next steps?
Maybe I’m missing something, but for now I don’t see how to get things forward.
Thanks!

Hi @David-Guillot.
I think it’s pretty clear there’s general support for the idea, so I’ve advanced it to the refinement phase.
It seemed from the discussion there were questions to be settled. It that right?
If so, even a DEP-light spec document can help flesh out the gaps in the proposal.
At some point, all I think we really need is some buy-in from likely people (those who already commented are among the candidates) that Yes, this is what we’re after for it to count as accepted.
Often a prototype can span the gap between working out what’s needed and official In Progress status. (“I built this, what do you think?” is a much easier ask than “How do want the API”, asked in abstract.)
I’ll mention @jacobtylerwalls here, as he may be a good candidate to help gather opinions so you’re not blocked.
Does that help any?

Hi @carltongibson and thanks for your quick and clear answer! Unfortunately, unlike what I was thinking when I posted here, my life got a bit chaotic in the past weeks and I haven’t got any time to answer, sorry about that. But I’ve done some homework regarding the feature, and I’ll answer in the Github issue directly. Thanks for moving it into refinement, that’s what it needs now.

Hey @David-Guillot — no pressure!
We recommend a strict self-care first policy over here on Django
— It sometimes looks slower, but it’s about keeping going long term, which I think we’re good at.
