Django.dev domain available for purchase - opportunity for DSF?

I noticed that django.dev is currently available for purchase. I found it on Namecheap for $800 with an $18 yearly renewal fee.

This seems like a reasonable investment for the Django Software Foundation to consider. We could use it alongside or as an alternative to djangoproject.com.

What do you all think? Would this be a worthwhile purchase for the foundation?

Thank you for the suggestion @abe, what do you think the foundation should do with it? It’s a cool domain, I’d love for us to have it for a future use, but $800 is pretty steep. That’s a grant for a Django event right there.

I think its a better domain that the current one (djangoproject . com)
We can redirect it to djangoproject . com
and plan to eventually do the opposite - redirect djangoproject.com to django . dev

I hear you about the price - i don’t really have any clue on djangos bugdet and spending.

@abe that’s a really cool domain, but moving the Django project from our current domain (djangoproject.com) to django.dev will require more logistics than we could think.

Sure we could do the redirection over time until the community is used to, but as of now we already built some notoriety around the djangoproject.com with SEO on most platforms.

I suggest we should have further thoughts about this I think. Maybe @thibaudcolas and @Afi will provide more help on this.

I think owning the domain - and redirecting it to djangoproject.com has value in it of itself.
I understand that doing anything beyond that can be a big challenge with a lowish priority.
(but it can really just happen organicly overtime - if someone decides to put the effort into it…)

I would be a -1 for this - mostly because it creates the possibility of a desire for incrementally acquiring a significant number of additional domains with no real identified benefit. (If you’re going to open the door for django.dev, then what about django.com or django.org? Taking it further, with the current explosions of TLDs, do we care about django.tech or django.software? What if .py is opened, would we care about django.py?)

This could end up being a never ending search for “appropriate” domains to acquire. As a non-commercial entity, I’m not sure that I see any tangible value from this.

Considering we are talking about a Non-Profit organization who has a lot of events and meetups to sponsor. The cost of such unique domains together is crazyyyyy!

I buy @KenWhitesell POV. For now DjangoProject.com is fine.

Only if we do replace django-admin with django

I would say we can place hard stop once we own a domain with the just word “django”
and django.dev is available as apposed to django.com and django.org

During the weekly office hours, @jacobian raised a concern about the “.dev” TLD being owned by Google, highlighting the potential for them to increase the yearly renewal fee at their discretion.

Oh, I didn’t mean to raise that as a concern, sorry for miscommunication. I really don’t care about who operates the TLD. I’m pretty agnostic about the whole proposal – I’d be fine with doing this, and fine with not, whatever.
