Why both "donate" and "sponsor" top level menu items on the website?

We made it bigger yesterday by adding “Sponsor” to the menu, which has made fundraising harder than it needs to be. (Sidenote: If anyone wants to change the subject to why “donate” and “sponsor” please create a new topic and feel free to tag me in it to avoid this changing the subject.)

Ok, I’m curious . @jeff would you mind running through the rationale for listing both? For example, why not an all encompassing “Support Us” menu item?

Tangential discussion from djangoproject main menu getting quite large - #2 by jeff

We wanted to have two different funnels because they serve two different audiences. Roughly 1/3 of our funding comes from individual donations, which is important to us, and the other 2/3 comes from corporate sponsorships. Making both one click away is extremely important for fundraising.

Something like a single “Support Us” menu with a dropdown might feel cleaner from a navigation standpoint, but it also buries both options a little and makes them less obvious. For fundraising, that extra step matters.

We’ve also changed how we present our sponsorship plans so we can send a company directly to one or two plans that make sense for them. That has made it much easier to talk with larger companies and pitch sponsorships, rather than sending them to a long grid of options and asking them to figure out where they fit.
