Hello!
Who’s interested in a virtual Django newbie-friendly “install party” / “jam session”?
The idea is that we would gather for 2-3 hours - have a “get to know you” chit chat - make sure everyone’s setup on their local environment (code editor / Python installed, venv & git setup), and then go through the Django tutorial together.
The end goal would be: Django tutorial app = live, containerized, deployed on a cloud platform, with tests & deployment automation (CI/CD) setup. We’ll also add Stripe integration, to provide a “Subscribe now” / “Buy it now” button.
Other goals -
I’ve been using the Django tutorial to teach Python & Django to newbies & kids in Latin America - I’ve got some feedback & suggested changes for the tutorial, so perhaps we could - as a group - contribute improvement ideas as we go thru it.
Potential benefits:
- For those of you in job-search mode, this can be a way to get some practice code runs in, meet & collaborate with smart people who might have good connections. Once we have the app live, you can link to it from your CV / Resume / website. And if you make useful & accepted improvements to the Django documentation, you officially get to say “I’m a contributor to a popular open-source project!” which can be nice to say in a job interview (and in life!)
- For those in entrepreneur mode, going thru the tutorial app can leave you with a good app template / base, to build your next app (or client’s app in). Freshly oiled tools.
- Sometimes coding at home can be lonely - I often want to program and can rarely find people locally who want to sit down & program together, chat about Python & interesting APIs & tools - so this is an attempt to get a regular flow going, and we can bring some social / cooperative learning into our lives. This can also be an area to celebrate wins - “Got dockerized Django working on Django” - “Learned some useful SQL-fu” and debug problems in the moment & get unstuck.
Leave a message below if you’re interested in participating, contributing & helping out - and please share your good ideas & suggestions. What would make this most valuable (and fun!) for you?
// JRO
PS: Free ! - I’m planning to order a pizza for myself AND will order a pizza for another person that joins the jam session (“two-pizza team, get it?”).
