Hey Djangonauts!
Summer is around the corner, and so is Google Summer of Code 2026!
We’re looking for awesome people like you to mentor contributors on some exciting Django projects. Whether they’re contributing to open source for the first time or already have experience, your guidance can make a huge difference in helping them succeed.
Some of our projects already have mentors, which is amazing — thank you to everyone who’s stepped up! But there are still a few projects without confirmed mentors, and we’d love your help. If you’ve ever wanted to support new contributors, shape projects that make a real impact, and help grow the Django community — this is a great way to get involved!
Checkout the complete list of projects here: SummerOfCode2026 – Django
What does being a mentor in GSoC mean?
- Guide potential contributors refine their ideas and scope
- Give regular feedback and technical guidance including PR reviews
- Making sure the project is going in the right direction during the contribution period
You don’t need to be an expert in every part of Django — just willing to share what you know and support a contributor.
If you’re interested in mentoring for GSoC 2026 or want to discuss a project, reply here or reach out on the Django forum. Let’s make this Summer of Code a great one for Django!

Hi @DevilsAutumn,
I’m interested in the Django Admin Keyboard Shortcuts & Accessibility project
for GSoC 2026. I’ve been actively contributing to the `django-admin-keyshortcuts`
package:
Is this project idea being considered for GSoC 2026? Is there a mentor lined up
for this area?
If not, I’m happy to contribute to other admin accessibility efforts. What
projects are looking for contributors?
Hi @prachisingh342006 ,
Thankyou for your contributions in the django ecosystem. The Django Admin Keyboard Shortcuts & Accessibility project was completed last year . Current years projects are listed on our wiki page: SummerOfCode2026 – Django .
Hope that helps.
Hi Djangonauts!
This is a fantastic initiative — really excited to see the energy around GSoC 2026 in the Django community!
I’d love to contribute as a mentor and help guide new contributors, especially in refining ideas, navigating real-world codebases, and maintaining clean, scalable solutions. Open source has played a huge role in my learning journey, so it would be great to give back and support others starting out.
I’m particularly interested in projects related to backend development, performance optimization, and developer tooling within Django, but I’m open to collaborating wherever I can add value.
Looking forward to connecting with the team and contributing to a successful GSoC this year!
Hi @DevilsAutumn Hope you are fine,
I have started learning Django last year and I want to broaden my horizons to contribute in multiple professional projects in the summer. I am MSc student in AI and want to work on hands-on innovative projects.
Could you please guide me how can I start ? I just checked out Google Summer of Code , and previous year projects, there are mentors . my question is shall we pay for the mentors ? shall we work on professional projects ?
Thank you
Hi @sudn2014 ,
Thankyou for taking out time to check this out.
I’m not sure if I understood your question correctly. But If you are interested in contributing to django, You can start here: Advice for new contributors | Django documentation | Django. Please checkout all the resources given on the page.
The ideal new contributors journey is that you pick a beginner friendly issue from the Trac, get it assigned to yourself, then prepare a patch and open a PR.
In case you need any help, you can ask in the official discord server of Django or post it here in the forum as well to get answers from a wider community.
If this doesn’t answer your question, please feel free to ask again.
Cheers.
