The welcome message from discobot indicates that if you’re a django contributor that you can message the admins to bypass the level 0 restrictions. However, you’re unable to send messages until level 1. A reasonable solution would be to update that message from discobot to indicate the milestones that need to be passed before being able to send that message.
The milestones to pass into level 1 (and be able to send a PM):
Hey @CodenameTim: we should probably adjust that message. I’m not sure DM-ing is a key part of the platform… A “Hiya” here, or similar is probably good enough.
It would be nice to have a visual indicator for when a topic has been closed by administration. Otherwise you write up a post and only upon trying to send it, you find out that you can’t.
I cannot recreate the error as the thread is not locked anymore.
Earlier I had written a post. I might have started writing the post when the thread was not locked. When I tried to submit the post I got an error that the thread is locked. I was able to see the reply box but clicking it triggered a message to appear. I think it zoomed me to the top of the thread.
I’m interested in posting an open Django developer position … would it be ok to do so in the “Announcements” category? Or should there be a “Jobs” category?
I notice - and I’ve seen this many times in other forums - that when someone is posing a question or requesting help, and they have accumulated several replies to their post, they are often ignored as presumed taken care of. Often times the OP is no further ahead however, despite the replies and their OP is left languishing and buried in the Forum unresolved. Bummer they couldn’t bump it up, or have a way of saying “I still need help”.
I follow the posts using the “latest” view - any new comment (such as yours) brings it back to the top of the list.
The moderators should probably provide an official answer for this, but as a regular user, I wouldn’t see any problem if someone posted an update after a reasonable period of time (4 - 7 days) with an update / request for further assistance.
I tried your suggestion, but it still lingers unresolved. I did, without offence, remove all comments but the OP. I’m also guilty of ignoring posts that have several replies. It’s a matter of humility and statistics: If the several replies didn’t resolve the issue, it is doubtful I have any more skill on offer, is my thinking and probably some others. I think if I ran a help forum, I’d probably sanction those who don’t identify there OP as RESOLVED and I’d slap a bright red tag on post titles if they were. I’d also have a date timer, say 4 days that if it’s still awaiting a fix the OP could perhaps 'Ring the bell" requesting more attention.
If this were an actual corporate-run site, with paid staff, I could see your point.
Keep in mind, we’re all volunteers here offering what expertise we have with the time available to us to donate to the community.
There are multiple reasons why you may not have received any assistance. In my case, it’s because I don’t use PowerShell, nor do I have any interest in exploring it beyond what little I know. If you wanted to switch from PowerShell to the traditional Command Line, I’d be more than happy to see what I could do to assist you. (I can’t speak for anyone else.)
This also isn’t the only channel available for assistance - in fact, it’s probably the least-used of the three “official channels” I’m aware of, with discussions going on about officially supporting a fourth.
Have you tried the Django User’s mailing list? IRC?
There’s also the thought that since the issue you’re encountering is centered around VS Code, you might also be able to find some assistance in a support channel for it.
Or, if this is really important to you, there are people who professionally offer training and support.
I was thinking of the mailing list but I’ve never quite wrapped my head around those. I always ended up getting a ton of mail with no pragmatic filtering that I was able to figure out. My whole goal is indeed to get training via this site by working through the tutorial. I’ll maybe switch to Command Line. See if VS Code lets me switch.
