Remove GSoC applications from Django internals?

Hi from a mostly silent reader. I think the topic came up last year, too, but I haven found the specific thread I believe that I am remembering.

I think it was proposed last year that GSoC applications or proposals are removed from the Django Internals category, and I think something was also agreed and acted upon.

Could we consider it for this year as well? Or maybe I’m just remembering it wrong in which case, I propose to put them in a different category altogether.

I was thinking the same thing.

Could be a “Projects” top level category, with “GSoC” nested under it. This would allow for other potential project programs.

Alternatively, community as the high level option which would be more conducive to django girls, Djangonaut Space, and other existing subcommunities.

Yes please, let’s move them out from Django Internals. How about moving the whole Mentoring category as a top-level one? we could have sub categories like GSoC, Djangonaut Space, etc in it.

What’s needed to come to a decision here?

I totally agree with this suggestion.

@nessita do you feel confident making this change as an admin or do we need to get someone else involved?

The choice of top level name seems to be:

  • Projects
  • Mentoring
  • Community

Thinking about how notifications work, I think GSoC is more aligned to Projects or Mentoring over Community (which could hold broader off-topic threads)?

I can definitely try

I rather we stick with “Mentoring” as the category name since it’s already an existing category, and perhaps some documentation may reference it by name?

Sounds good to me. Go for it!

We can also loop in Ken once it’s done to help with moving existing threads over to new category.

If you need any help with this, I’d be happy to contribute.

Mentorship is now top-level and I created two sub categories, GSoC and Djangonaut Space:

No need. I can assure you that Ken pretty much reads every message posted here.

I noticed a small typo in the new category name. It should be ‘Google Summer of Code’ instead of ‘Google Season of Code’.

Is not a typo, is intentional. Summer happens on half of the world, the other half will be on winter and we don’t want to exclude them.

About 350 Topics in the “Mentorship” category have been reviewed and recategorized. About 240 were moved to GSOC subcategory and another 10 or so were moved elsewhere based upon their contents. I feel like the other 80ish are appropriate to remain in the top-level group.
(And as always, am open to suggestions and corrections.)

I’m really happy about this change. Moving the entire subcategory Mentorship to the top-level was a good call and makes me happy
